Katie-Jane Hermes is the owner of The Garden Studio, a wedding and events florist. Katie has been active in all aspects of the floristry world; from shop work to competitions and now with demonstrating and teaching. All of which have further developed her experience and skill.
How it all started
Katie studied art and photography in school but had never thought of flowers as a career until her mum bought a flower shop 10 years ago. She started as a: “Saturday girl sweeping the floor and making the tea, then caught the flower bug and couldn’t stop! I have been a florist ever since.”
Her business, The Garden Studio, mainly focuses on weddings. The style being: “full, chunky and luxurious with plenty of foliage”. Katie buys from Florismart because of the extensive choice of garden roses, but also for the huge overall selection of flowers that she can choose from!
According to The Garden Studio, a 2017 wedding is set in ivory and blush. Which they believe will always be the most popular choice. Katie adds: “I’m certainly seeing a rise in brides asking for more foliage and looser more relaxed arrangements. With Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2017 being Greenery this will be very on trend!”
So far, 2017 has been busy for the Garden Studio. They just finished off the year with a monumental wedding which saw them inundated with enquiries as they entered January.
Katie has released some new workshop dates and has also started teaching floristry at Sunderland college. “For me, this is my biggest achievement of the year so far. The main reason I spent three years studying for my Foundation Degree in Floristry was so I had the qualifications and knowledge to teach.”
The Garden Studio is looking forward to the rest of the year. They have plenty of weddings booked. As well as more teaching, workshops in Dublin and a tour in Scotland demonstrating to flower clubs and the Harrogate Flower Show.
